Those new to the paleo diet or those thinking of trying it have many questions about it as well as some misconceptions. In this post we will answer the top questions about the paleo diet and address some common misconceptions.
What is the Paleo Diet?
Contrary to what many believe, following eating paleo doesn’t mean that you primarily eat meat. A paleo diet is in fact plant based with meat as an important part of the diet. The paleo diet is meant to be similar to the diet our hunter – gatherer ancestors ate. They gathered more than they hunted! A healthy paleo diet is one that is fairly balanced with lower fat consumption. You should aim to eat plenty of vegetables, lean meat, fish and eggs while limiting fruits and nuts.
Is a paleo diet good for weight loss?
Following a healthy paleo diet can be very instrumental in facilitating weight loss when following proper guidelines as previously mentioned. The Paleo Food Pyramid above is a good frame of reference to keep in mind.
Is the paleo diet anti-inflammatory?
Because vegetables are a large part of a healthy paleo diet the answer is yes. In addition healthy fats from sources such as avocados and coconut oil along with omega-3 fatty acids from wild caught seafood also contribute to an anti-inflammatory diet.
Is a paleo diet good for diabetics?
Yes, because the paleo diet is one rich in vitamins and minerals and unprocessed foods and low in foods that cause allergic reactions. Also because a healthy paleo diet restricts sugar intake by lowering the portions of fruit eaten diabetics will see an increase in controlling blood glucose levels, healthy weight loss and more energy.
Which nuts are okay on a paleo diet?
According to the acclaimed website PaleoLeap.com the following nuts are acceptable on the paleo diet: Pistachios, Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds (pepitas), pecans, walnuts, pine nuts, macadamia nuts, chestnuts, cashews, almonds, hazelnuts. Peanuts are actually legumes and are NOT allowed on the paleo diet. If the idea of giving up peanut butter hurts you then try almond butter instead. Almonds have many vitamins and minerals needed by the human body and have been shown in studies to help prevent illnesses like Alzheimer’s and cancer. Still, as with all nuts they should be eaten in moderation.
What is a good paleo diet meal plan?
Here’s an example of a day’s paleo meals from PaleoHacks.com
- Breakfast: Maple Pecan Granola with Bacon Sprinkles (1 serving): While oat-based granola lacks protein, this sweet and savory pecan granola is rich in protein.
- Lunch: One Pan Lemon and Herb Chicken (2 servings): Lemons are high in vitamin C, an antioxidant that supports the natural detox function of the liver, and when paired with chicken and herbs, provide an immune-boosting combo that is anti-inflammatory and digestion balancing.
- Dinner: Chipotle Chicken Soup (4 servings): Chicken is an excellent Paleo protein that’s rich in amino acids, which have a wide range of benefits including heart health, blood sugar balance, and a protein that decreases risk of colorectal cancer. When thrown in a soup, it’s a budget-friendly way to get protein and other nutrients that won’t break the bank.
